How do I care for my furniture?

Timber is a beautiful natural material and is a popular choice for residential and commercial furniture and joinery. When considering timber there are several things to be mindful of. Variations occur in every single length of timber, including grain, colour and finish. Solid timber is susceptible to movement over time, especially in warmer, humid climates or in environments where temperatures frequently vary. Movement, including splits and cracks are not considered faults, but a natural phenomenon.

No amount of acclimatisation or climate controlled drying will fully prepare the timber for our homes. We expect a lot from our furniture and rightly so. But if we want our timber furniture to perform to the best of its ability for years to come it must be well looked after. To enjoy the beauty of this product for many years, we recommend that you follow these few simple steps:

  • Always lift your furniture when moving, as dragging it will damage the legs and/or joints
  • Do not use cleaning products that contain silicone or concentrated chemicals as these will breakdown the finish. At RAW Sunshine Coast we use Osmo natural oil/wax based finishes on all of our pieces (unless otherwise stated), therefore we only recommend Osmo cleaning products. These are not only kind to your furniture but also to the environment. We cannot guarantee your surface if a cleaning product other than this is used.
  • Use Osmo, a natural oil wax finish to replenish and protect the timber on a reoccurring basis (usually every 6-12 months or sooner is your furniture is showing early signs of deterioration). Osmo cleaning products and maintenance kits are available for purchase from our store and we can advise on the right type of product for your piece of furniture
  • Be sure to use a dry cloth and not to saturate the surface as this will breakdown the finish.
  • Dust regularly with a clean cotton cloth
  • Immediately wipe up spills so they do not cause the finish to breakdown
  • Avoid placing your furniture near fire places, in direct sunlight or under heating/cooling vents
  • Avoid long term exposure to direct sunlight as this can alter the appearance of your furniture
  • Always use place mats and coasters under plates, cups and glasses, whether they are hot or cold
  • Use a humidifier, open bowl of water or vase with water in the room to keep moisture in the air
  • When writing, it is best to use a matt, so not to dent your furniture
  • Small splits and cracks may develop which add more character over time. The small splits are not a fault, but a natural phenomenon
  • Only use furniture for its intended purpose
  • Securely anchor any drawers, bookshelves, height charts etc. to a wall to prevent tip over accidents. Furniture anchoring systems / safety straps can be purchased from any hardware store
  • Handles, hinges and painted surfaces may chip or become scratched with use over time. Treat these areas with care and do not use any abrasive cleaning cloths or products on them.
  • Ensure that any salt build up on aluminium frames is removed with the occasional wipe with warm soapy water
  • If your furniture becomes stained, scratched, chipped or suffers other damage, we recommend you obtain professional help

We trust you will enjoy this product for many years!
